Natural Cycle Calendar Company
Natural Cycle Calendar Company, formally established in 2009, was conceived in 1996 by Laurene M Powers. The calendar’s original purpose was to journal personal cycles, such as menstrual activity, alongside cosmic events. Instead of looking at lists, or tables, to obtain the cosmic data, Natural Cycle Calendars provide a visual of our connectivity with the universe.
One can weigh several factors at a glance: which phase of any particular moon cycle (waxing, waning, full moon, etc), where Earth is positioned with respect to the Sun (the Sun astrology), which element is associated with the Earth’s position, as well as the lunar and solar eclipses.
We cannot dismiss our energetic ties to the cosmos and say it has nothing to do with us. The tides are one of our visual signs of this kind of impact, as they ebb and flow to the pull of the moon. Do not negate the impact of these cosmic cycles upon the human psyche; remember we are two-thirds water ourselves. Our chemistry is no different than is found ‘out there’; we are cosmic matter. At any given time one may be experiencing feelings not apparently linked to us, but because we are connected to ‘out there’, we are impacted.
The calendars have a lot more going on than just the cosmic data. Most of the calendars are painted utilizing the full spectrum of colors of the rainbow, representing all people. I endeavor to depict the continual movement of color within the light of our Creator, dancing in kaleidoscopic fashion, in full expression, celebrating life and love. The colors also represent our chakras, the body’s energy centers, and the balance we require to create harmony within ourselves. When our inner colors are balanced, they can help us to actualize the best life possible in our outer world.
The calendars also invoke higher thought, taking one outside his/her personal situation, and make one consider a ‘bigger picture’. We are part of what happens across the globe; it does have to do with us.
Geometry is used as the base of the calendars, representing the Sacred Geometry of the Universe, as well as each of us as facets of the whole. A Kaleidoscope continually changes form, bits of colored light, falling, dancing, changing, and evolving. That is how I view the Whole, as a Great Kaleidoscope, beautiful, and full of potential.
The most satisfying part about drawing the calendars is to observe the balance of the natural year. The eclipses always balance geometrically, as do the solstices, and equinoxes. Each year brings a surprise, geometrically speaking.
My background in manual drafting has aided my visual expression of the calendar. I hand draw and ink the line work; and the circles are freehanded. I consider the imperfection of this method to fit the calendar more than a computer generated version, and find it much more rewarding to hand paint the calendars with water color.
Laurene M. Powers lives in the bush on the Barriere River east of Barriere, British Columbia. Laurene and her partner Bill live as modern day pioneers off-grid. During the long winters when snow depths eliminate road access, Laurene and Bill cross the Barriere River to access the outside world, by canoe, by chest waders, or by zip-line. Laurene also paints pictures inspired by and telling the story of their lives in the bush. Every picture tells a story, and brings a smile, in her unique childlike form of folk art.
Laurene continually paints new variations of her calendars; the website may not always reflect the entirety of what is available. She also paints original mats for the calendars, adding an organic quality to the geometric presentation to achieve a beautiful balance. Original calendars are also available, as well as custom painted versions. Contact Laurene for further info.
